Second Performance

  • Country of venue: Belgium

  • Topic: Poverty and Social Status

This time we decided to go a bit further and we prepared the play to be performed in a "non-friendly environment", away from the protecting school. We would  move to the street, which meant we needed to have a thorough preparation.

The warming up exercises had to do with getting to know one another as well as to develop trust among the group. We needed a strong team.

To develop improvisation skills we worked using Dorothy Heathcote's methodology, with the exercises called "Wild Animals", which you can access in Drama Based Teaching section

And here it is our story. We prepared two different plots. Both stories have a rich and a poor girl begging for money. In the first story, the rich girl asks for money because she has forgotten her wallet at home and she's hungry. In the second one, our rich girl is asking for money to buy the latest iPhone because her parents don't want to buy her one. In both stories the poor girl characters ask people for money to eat something. The results are astonishing. Just watch the video to find out.

To avoid technical problems, we tried to record the play as carefully as possible with the poor means we had: our smartphones. Some members of the team were hidden shooting from different angles, and the girls had their own devices recording the sound in order not to miss anything that could be of interest.

After the recording we edited the video and it was shown in the school in front of all the pupils. The forum took place and everyone could add their views and draw conclusions.
